The Journal approach

Explain the measure. Keep the context.

The editorial approach: useful explanations of economic numbers, with their sources, assumptions and limits close by.

Start with a concrete question.

Explain what a measure means, the period it covers and the people or activity it represents. Keep rates of change separate from levels, totals separate from averages, and earnings separate from cash.

Show the working.

Use official series and underlying documents where available. Identify units, dates, adjustments and calculation assumptions. Label a fictional example clearly, rather than presenting it as observed data.

Keep conclusions within the evidence.

An aggregate does not describe every household. A single accounting number does not establish the quality of an investment. The publication offers general information, without personal investment recommendations.

Keep the evidence close.

Sources, research notes and material corrections belong with the story. They should help readers understand the reasoning and its limits.

Represent the publication honestly.

Existing collective bylines are retained as source attribution. Legal entity, ownership, funding and current contributor details remain pending. A final corrections procedure remains pending.
